Imam Ali (as), renowned for his profound akhlaq (moral character), epitomized the highest virtues of compassion, justice, and humility. As the nafs (self) of Prophet Muhammad (sawa), Imam Ali's (as) character was a reflection of the Prophet’s (sawa) own exemplary traits. His life and actions mirror the divine qualities of Prophet Muhammad (sawa), embodying the same principles of moral integrity and righteousness. Just as the Prophet Muhammad (sawa) is regarded as uswa e hasana (the ideal model), Imam Ali’s (as) behavior and ethical conduct serve as a living testament to this ideal, reinforcing the seamless continuity of their shared spiritual and moral legacy.
A Lesson in Humility and Fairness
An incident that highlights Imam Ali’s (‘a) character occurred when he visited a marketplace. A merchant, recognizing him, tried to offer an excessive discount, but Imam Ali (‘a) declined, refusing to exploit his status as the Caliph. He then went to another store where the owner did not recognize him, bought two garments, one for three dirhams and one for two. He gave the more expensive garment to his servant, Qambar (as), and kept the cheaper one for himself. When Qambar (as) suggested the Imam deserved the better garment due to his higher status, the Imam (‘a) replied, "You are young and you enjoy the enthusiasm of youth, while I am too shy of my Lord to prefer myself to you."
A Testament to Forbearance and Mercy
Another incident underscores Imam Ali’s (as) forbearance and self-restraint. One day, Imam Ali (‘a) called upon a servant of his, but the servant refused to answer. The Imam (‘a) then called him twice and thrice, but no answer was shown.
The Imam (‘a) then came to the servant and asked, ‘Why have you refused to answer me?’
The servant answered, ‘Well, I am too lazy to answer you. Besides, I was sure that you would not punish me; therefore, I refused to answer.’
Upon this reply, the Imam (‘a) felt glad and said,
All praise be to Allah Who has made me one of those whose vengeance is secured by His creatures.
The Imam (‘a) then freed the servant for the sake of Almighty Allah.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (as) character is a shining example of virtue, combining deep humility, honesty, and kindness. Guided by the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (sawa), his life sets a lasting standard for moral excellence. His legacy continues to inspire, encouraging us all to reach for the highest ideals of ethical and spiritual conduct.
