Effects of Good Akhlaq

"How many seekers of the path of God have spent a long time engaged in tahajjud, rising in the night [for prayer], fasting, and permissible asceticism. But because their treatment of their mother and father was not good, their efforts did not get them anywhere. And after many years, spiritual doors did not open for them.

And how many of those who were not busy with lots of asceticism, recommended acts [mustahabat], supererogatory prayers (nawafil), and abandoning the abominable actions [makruhat], but as a result of observing the matters that are related to people, such as respecting the rights of elders and parents, they have reached high stations and lofty ranks."
