Birth and Lineage


Imam Muhammad ibn Ali (as), commonly known as Imam al-Baqir (as), was born on the 1st of Rajab, 57 AH/676 CE, in Medina. He was the eldest son of Imam Zain al-Abidin (as) and Lady Fatimah, the daughter of Imam Hasan (as).


Imam al-Baqir (as) holds the unique distinction of having both his maternal and paternal grandfathers as Imams. This lineage underscores his profound connection to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) through both Imam Hasan (AS) and Imam Hussain (AS). His title, "Baqir ul-Uloom," meaning "the one who analyzes knowledge," reflects his deep understanding and dissemination of Islamic sciences.


Noble Morals and Character


Imam al-Baqir (AS) was renowned for his exemplary character and patience. A notable incident highlighting his moral integrity occurred when a Christian mocked him by mispronouncing his name as "baqar" (cow). Calmly and without any display of anger, Imam al-Baqir (AS) responded: “No, I am not baqar, but I am Baqir.” 


This response, delivered with grace and dignity, profoundly impacted the Christian, who later embraced Islam. This story exemplifies Imam al-Baqir’s (AS) ability to inspire transformation through his noble demeanor and profound wisdom.


Martyrdom and Legacy


Imam al-Baqir (AS) passed away on the 7th of Dhul-Hijjah, 114 AH/733 CE, in Medina. He was poisoned by the Umayyad Caliph Hisham. Despite facing persecution, Imam al-Baqir’s (AS) contributions to Islamic thought and his legacy of wisdom remain influential. His teachings and moral example continue to inspire Muslims, emphasizing the importance of knowledge, patience, and ethical conduct.
